“Supreme Court rules in favor of Black Alabama voters in unexpected defense of Voting Rights Act” from AP News (June 8, 2023)

“Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl said in a statement that state lawmakers would comply with the ruling. ‘Regardless of our disagreement with the Court’s decision, we are confident the Alabama Legislature will redraw district lines that ensure the people of Alabama are represented by members who share their beliefs, while following the requirements of applicable law,’ Wahl said.”

“Resident: Stop the myths, save the children” from Main Street Media of Tennessee (June 9, 2023)

“The real problem is cowardice. The majority of legislators in Washington and in Tennessee have been cowardly groveling to the god of the NRA and the gun business lobby, fearing its retribution if they disagree in any way.  And as they bow, people die, many of them school children. Like they did at the Covenant school in Nashville.”

“Supreme Court lifts hold on Louisiana redistricting case that could boost power of Black voters” from PBS NewsHour (June 26, 2023)

“In both states [Louisiana and Alabama], Black voters are a majority in just one congressional district. Lower courts had ruled that the maps raised concerns that Black voting power had been diluted, in violation of the landmark federal Voting Rights Act.”

“About a third of Louisiana’s residents are Black. More than one in four Alabamians are Black.”

“US Supreme Court rejects bid to give lawmakers unchecked power over elections” from Reuters (June 27, 2023)

“The legal theory, called ‘independent state legislature’ doctrine, is based in part on the U.S. Constitution’s statement that the ‘times, places and manner’ of federal elections ‘shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature thereof.'”

“North Carolina megachurch Elevation Church leaves SBC amid turmoil” from The Tennessean (June 30, 2023)

“‘You will find that our Statement of Beliefs on our website is very much in line with the Baptist Faith and Message — we have no intention of changing those core beliefs,’ Elevation said in a June 26 letter to the SBC Executive Committee. Baptist Press obtained a copy of the letter and first reported the news.”

“Understanding the roots causes of gun violence: changing the narrative” from the Virginia Mercury (July 26, 2023)

“The question becomes, where do we go from here? Among Virginia’s 38 independent cities, Richmond leads in gun-related homicides and is second among all Virginia localities per capita. Innovative solutions are needed to improve institutional services, enhance access to resources and empower the community to participate in bringing about positive changes. It is time we elevate the effort needed to prevent this devastation.”
